US dogs and cats in numbers

US Pet Owners Increase Over than three times in the period from 1970 (67 million) to 2012 (164 million). Otherwise saying, in 2012, 62% of American families have at least one pet. Over the year, Americans spent more than 50 on pets billion dollars.

Dogs

  • 83.3 million dogs
  • 47% of families have at least one dog
  • 70% of dog owners keep one dog
  • 20% of dog owners keep two dogs
  • 10% of dog owners have more than three dogs
  • 1.46 – average number of dogs per owner
  • 20% of dogs were taken from shelters
  • $ 231 – average annual amount for veterinary services
  • 83% of dogs are sterilized or neutered

Cats

  • 95.5 million cats
  • 46% of cat owners keep one cat
  • 31% of owners of cats with two cats
  • 24% of cat owners with three or more cats
  • 2.11 – average number of cats per owner
  • 26% of cats admitted from animal shelters
  • $ 193 – the average annual cost of a veterinarian
  • 91% of cats are sterilized or neutered

Calculations from animal nurseries:

  • 3500 – the number of nurseries for animals in the USA
  • 6-8 million dogs and cats enter kennels annually
  • 25% of dogs in kennels are thoroughbred
  • 3-4 million dogs and cats a year people take from kennels
  • 30% of the dogs in the kennel were left there by the owners
  • 5% of cats left by owners in animal kennels
