Average weight of adult chinchillas: Females = 400-500 grams, males = 400-600 grams.
Newborn chinchillas are born completely covered in fur, with open eyes, a full set of 20 teeth, and capable of walk and run well enough. Weight of healthy chinchillas at birth usually varies from 35 to 60 grams. Puppies with weight less than 25 grams are considered weak and have a low chance of survival without additional care.
After the birth, the chinchilla will be wet, so within an hour after childbirth, it should dry to prevent hypothermia or even death. If there are more than 2 puppies in the litter, then a chinchilla that eats the worst or doesn’t eat at all, may die of malnutrition. Chinchillates usually start drinking milk mother within 1 hour after birth. Newborn chinchillas should gain from 5 to 10 grams of weight per week.
